QUHMS presents 'Careers in Health Care Management'

If you are really looking for long term job security, think health care. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Healthcare occupations as a group will rise 27 percent by 2014, which is growing at a rate three times faster than the growth of the population.
Michael Mandel of Business Week Online said recently in a magazine cover story that growth in health care is "propping up the economy."
While many of the jobs in health care relate to clinical work, a good portion of them are business-related. After all, health care agencies are businesses and must be managed efficiently.
Taking heed to these facts, the newly formed Quinnipiac University Health Management Society (QUHMS), sponsored "Exploring Careers in Health Care Management," held in the Mancheski Seminar room on Wednesday, April 2.
Speakers at the event included Director of Financial Planning and Budget for Yale New Haven Health System Michael Loftus, Head of Network Development for Aetna Government Health Plans, Aetna, Inc. Susan Graves, Director of Pharmacy Services, Yale New Haven Hospital Lisa Stump and the President/CEO, Whitney Center Greg Gravel.
This distinguished panel attracted over 40 students. The speakers described the explosion of career opportunities in the health care industry. Each speaker also described their unique role in the industry.
"I found it very interesting to learn about the interactions between the clinicians and the managers, and how vital that relationship is to the success of a health care organization," said Megan Montagne, a freshman Physicians Assistant major.
One of QUHMS's goals is to explore more careers in the health care industry.
The organization holds bi-weekly meetings and addresses national and global health care issues and helps students understand the business and political sides of health care in the United State
