It is with great pleasure that I start this memo by congratulating all of you for participating in one of SGA’s largest voter turnouts! With more than 2,150 votes, the student body has successfully elected a new Student Government Association that will continuously work to improve the quality of student life here at Quinnipiac.

Through the leadership of the current Student Government Association, we have carefully focused all of our time on improving relations in the four following areas: service to students, service to community, collaboration with faculty, administrators and staff, and finally, internal success in our operations and leadership.

I am confident that the newly installed officers of the 2010-2011 Student Government Association will continue the success, and will also come to add their own accomplishments as time goes by.

Please know that the Student Government Association consistently strives to make Quinnipiac a better place to live, learn, and grow on your behalf. We welcome any opportunity for you to get involved on the Quinnipiac campus and look forward to promoting leadership and personal growth within the QU community.

For the past week, students have been enthusiastic in posting fliers and meeting students all across campus in hopes of being elected for open positions on the Student Government Association for 2010-2011. Thank you all so much for your votes on Blackboard and supporting your new student representatives.  Your new Executive Board, Presidents, Vice Presidents and Representatives look forward to a smooth transition with the current Student Government members.  Look forward to an SGA Newsletter before the end of the spring semester with some important and exciting messages from YOUR new SGA.
In addition, the Big Event Committee, CAP and SGA have been working hard on the finishing details of Quinnipiac’s Big Event. All teams are filled at this time, but we are still looking for extra volunteers to go in the place of those who cannot attend last minute.  Please e-mail BigEvent@quinnipiac.edu if you are interested in being an extra volunteer or a volunteer driver.  The event will take place on Saturday, April 10, and all are welcome to attend the Opening Ceremony at 9:00 a.m.  Mayor Scott Jackson of Hamden and Mayor John DiStefano of New Haven have graciously agreed to be our opening speakers for the day.

Without any doubt, the Student Government Association has had an exciting week! We are continuously finding success in the following areas: The Big Event registration, SGA Meet and Greets, our first ever Treasurer’s Round Table, our “Love Conquers Hate” program, and we have recently elected two new members on to the general board!

The Big Event registration is going off without a hitch, with more than 300 students signing up to participate by the third day.  We encourage you to sign up for the Big Event, which will give you the opportunity to give back to the Hamden, North Haven and New Haven communities. You will be able to participate with your friends, hall mates, team members, fraternity brothers and sorority sisters, organizational friends, and other fellow Bobcats in a day that you will never forget! On Saturday, April 10, your team will travel to the assigned site to participate in community service – painting outdated walls, playing with kids, assisting the elderly, organizing pantries and much more! On Thursday, Feb. 18, the Presidents and Vice Presidents committee of the Student Government Association hosted its first Meet and Greet of the semester on the North Haven campus. The presidents and vice presidents of the class cabinets had the privilege to meet more than 100 students, while handing out coffee and doughnuts as complimentary breakfast treats! Our Meet and Greet on the North Haven campus gave us the opportunity to interact with students on advancing student life at Quinnipiac – especially for those who study at the North Haven campus. SGA will be hosting two more Meet and Greets throughout the semester. Look out for them and come voice your thoughts! We want to make your Quinnipiac experience the best it can be!

The Finance Committee of the Student Government Association has hosted its first ever Treasurer’s Round Table, which gave student organizational treasurers the opportunity to learn more about the finance and budgetary process. There were over forty campus treasurers present – and we look forward to meeting more in the future!

Our “Love Conquers Hate” program was held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, and was hosted by more than 10 student organizations. This program, organized by Sophomore Class Rep. Kaite Lovett and the Programming Committee, highlighted the positive attributes Quinnipiac organizations bring to the Quinnipiac community in terms of diversity and communal respect. We are thankful to those who were in attendance, and to those organizations that had a hand in the success of the program.

Lastly, the Student Government Association welcomes its newest members, Junior Class Rep. Ashley Rose Sherman and Freshman Class Rep. Nicole Hurst. We look forward to their participation in advancing the quality of student life here in the Quinnipiac community.

Have you ever wondered how the recently announced medical school will affect the current and future undergraduate student body?  Is it true that a medical school can be beneficial to the advancement of the undergraduate degree? These are just a few of the questions that are circulating the campus community after the University announced plans to begin the development of a medical school – with intentions of enrolling the first class as early as 2013.

You are invited to join the Student Government Association on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 4:15 p.m. in SC207 for an SGA meeting in which President Lahey will talk about the recently announced medical school.  The members of the Student Government Association will be meeting with Lahey in an effort to answer questions that undergraduate students might have. This may also serve as an opportunity for you to ask the president a question yourself!

SGA is also excited to share with you a commercial series in which our year-long goals and objectives will be showcased.  The commercials are directed by our very own Matt Galo, who dually serves as a Senior Class Representative and the President of the Quinnipiac Film Society (QFS).  You can find the commercials featured on The Chronicle Web site, and circulating throughout the Quinnipiac Facebook network.

SGA hopes that you are ready for an amazing semester of spectacular events and new traditions.  It is with great hope that we anticipate Quinnipiac’s first annual Big Event.  Quinnipiac’s Big Event is Saturday, April 10, at which teams of 10 students will volunteer at a predetermined non-profit organization of their choice.  Sites could range from beach clean-ups, Sleeping Giant clean-ups, painting the inner facilities of a day care center, or even gardening at a senior center.  All we are asking for is THREE hours of your time to dedicate community service to a site of YOUR choice!

It’s a new year and we want to celebrate by making a difference on this campus in 2010.  The Community Action Project and the Student Government Association are partnering in sponsoring Quinnipiac’s Big Event, but we need your help.  Below are the details for the informational sessions if you would like to find out more about this brand-new and exciting tradition that exists at over 200 universities across the nation! The Student Government Association recently  hosted its annual Winter Training upon the beginning of the semester, in which the members worked towards progressing semester long goals and events. We are very excited to share two new Student Government Association commercials with you, which can be found on social networking sites such as Facebook, and YouTube. You can find a link to the video commercials below.

The Student Government Association is also pleased to announce its support for the ALANA&I Mentoring Group in their efforts to raise money for the Haiti relief project. ALANA&I gives QU community members the opportunity to donate to four different organizations: the American Red Cross, Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders and Wyclef Jean’s Yele  Haiti Foundation.

Many Quinnipiac students have already expressed leadership through supporting Haiti, which stands as a testament to the character of our community and our commitment to the global community. If you are interested in donating through ALANA&I, please contact Quanita Jones or myself through email.

Further, if you are interested in getting involved on campus, please consider attending the Spring Involvement Fair which will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 4-6 p.m. in the Burt Kahn gym. I hope to see you there!
