Faculty, others decry Lahey’s words on Donnelly

Something seemed askew with President John Lahey’s words on former School of Communications dean David Donnelly, and some members of the Quinnipiac faculty picked it up pretty quickly. Within minutes of releasing Lahey’s characterization of Donnelly’s “accidental” deanship, The Chronicle was alerted via e-mail, Twitter and face-to-face of a national search that took place prior to Donnelly’s promotion to dean.

Java John is no longer whipping up lattes and cappuccinos for his cherished Quinnipiac students. Johnny Cash, however, now mans a register from opening until 2:30 every weekday. They are, in fact, one and the same: QU’s beloved John Raccio.
“The coffee area was always jamming,” Raccio said.

Media groups give food, take rights

On Sept. 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the final time to establish the rights of American citizens.
On Sept. 17, 2009, Quinnipiac student groups attempted to show the importance of these rights by taking them away.
The First Amendment Free Food Festival, or FAFFF as it was named, welcomed students into Alumni Hall on Thursday for a free lunch from Panera Bread.

Iron in his veins

Nine hours and 47 minutes was all it took for junior Jonathan Fecik to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles at the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon in Idaho. He took first place in the 18-to-24 age group, and placed among the top five overall, earning a spot in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii.

Students turn out for free flu shots

Each year, 36,000 people die from flu-related causes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With the media coverage of the H1N1 flu virus blanketed across the news, many people are taking precautionary measures to avoid getting the flu.

Semi-Charmed Kind of Line

Students lined the corridors of Tator Hall to purchase their tickets to see alternative rockers Third Eye Blind at the TD Bank Sports Center on Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. For the past five years, Third Eye Blind has been one of the most wanted bands by Quinnipiac students but has not been available until now.

Professor of Communications Sharon Kleinman is the editor of “The Culture of Efficiency: Technology in Everyday Life,” published this past August by Peter Lang Publishing.
The book is a collection of 21 essays that discuss how people are adjusting to technological developments in the digital age.

Great Caesar to open Fall Concert

Local band Great Caesar, featuring Quinnipiac junior and WQAQ Music Director Mike Farrell will open for Third Eye Blind on Oct. 10, but getting to that point wasn’t easy. It took a barrage of Facebook posts on the event’s wall and a personal appeal to Third Eye Blind to get the job done.

Walking the walk

Following last year’s Relay for Life success, Quinnipiac had a lot to live up to in 2009, and plenty of obstacles in its way.
Last year’s inaugural Relay for Life at Quinnipiac was awarded the title of “Rookie of the Year.” Despite being held during the weekend that May Weekend has traditionally been celebrated on, as well as concerns due to the condition of the economy, this year’s event appears to have been a success as well.

Earth Week at QU

The first annual Earth Week was held at Quinnipiac University from Monday, April 20 to Thursday, April 23, and it highlighted special themes based on student interests. The exit to the Café was decorated with banners, posters and handouts highlighting important environmental issues and ways students could make a change.

‘10, ‘11 to have Quad Ceremonies

Quinnipiac University will hold a single outdoor commencement ceremony on the University Quadrangle for the Classes of 2010 and 2011, according to Lynn Bushnell, vice president for public affairs and chair of the Commencement Committee. Bushnell said this was done in response to the concerns of students and their parents.

QU Habitat builds houses, hope

A smoky cloud of sawdust filled the worksite as 18 Quinnipiac University students were framing a house on their spring break trip to Chatham County, N.C., March 7 through 14.
Quinnipiac’s Habitat for Humanity, a community-service student organization, builds and rehabilitates houses to fight homelessness.

“Here we go Bobcats! Here we go!” cried Information Systems Management professor Bruce White, tuba in tow, at the women’s lacrosse game.
“Come on, Bruce. We’re destroying them,” sophomore Michel Coutermarsh retorted, drawing chuckles from spectators.
Such is the nature of Quinnipiac’s Pep Band.
