‘Cats crushed by No. 3 Notre Dame

The Bobcats lost to conference foe Notre Dame, 10-2, in their final home game of the season. Jack Oppenheimer and Kevin Kelly each scored for the Bobcats, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the undefeated Fighting Irish. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 3-8 on the year and 1-3 in the Great Western Lacrosse League.

The Fighting Irish got off to a blazing start, scoring seven unanswered goals in the first half. Neil Hicks, Eric Keppeler, Grant Krebs, Adam Felicetti and Nicholas Beattie scored the first five goals for Notre Dame, while Duncan Swezey capped the 7-0 run with two goals in the final two minutes of the half.

Quinnipiac finally got on the board three minutes into the second half thanks to an unassisted goal from Oppenheimer to make the score 7-1. The goal was his 16th of the season, which leads the team. Notre Dame responded with goals from Ryan Hoff and Krebs’ second of the day to put the Fighting Irish up 9-1.

In the fourth quarter, Kelly added a goal for the Bobcats, with an assist from Ben Mullaney, to bring the score to 9-2. Notre Dame bounced back with a goal from Kevin Cullinane for the final goal in the contest with six minutes left in the game. In the final six minutes, the Fighting Irish defense secured their 11th victory of the season, 10-2.

The Bobcats try to keep their playoff hopes alive when they conclude their regular season on April 25 against Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., at 1 p.m.
